YBGR uses the Child and Adolescent Functional Assessment Scale (CAFAS)

The Child and Adolescent Functional Assessment Scale (CAFAS) is a validated assessment tool that measures the degree of everyday functioning in 8 areas of the youth’s life: home, school/work, community, behavior toward others, moods/emotions, self-harmful behavior, substance use and thinking. It is essentially a list of behavioral descriptors the rater selects to describe the youth based on a variety of their informational sources The CAFAS is completed at admission, during periodic intervals (quarterly), and at discharge from the program.

happy mother and soneThe CAFAS items are grouped into 4 levels of functioning. Each level is assigned a score. The 4 levels and their scores are: no impairment (0), mild (10), moderate (20), and severe (30). Scores are given for each of the 8 areas. These 8 scores are added together to give a total CAFAS score. The goal is to improve the behaviors and reduce the scores. The lower the score, the better. This score can be used to track a youth’s improvement over time.

Below is data based on 337 youth scores for the Community Based Services and Residential programs at YBGR - admit and discharge score comparisons.

Level of functioning Number of youth with
this Score at Admission
Number of youth with
this Score at Discharge
Severe (140+) 236 40
Marked (100-130) 82 81
Moderate (50-90) 19 172
Minimal (0-40) 0 44

This information shows that youth improved in their functioning from the time they were admitted to YBGR programs until they were discharged from the programs. Remembering that the lower the score the better, youth had much lower scores at discharge with than when they were admitted.
