Meet the Certified Staff

Welcome to Yellowstone Academy! We would like to take this time to introduce you to a few of our Administrators and Teachers.

Michael J. Sullivan
Michael J. SullivanSuperintendent/Principal of Yellowstone Academy

Briefly introduce yourself/degrees/certifications.
I graduated from MSU-B with a B.S. in Special Education and Elementary Education. Upon graduation, I was hired at Will James Middle School where I spent 11 years teaching. While teaching at Will James, I received a M.Ed. in Educational Technologies and School Administration.

In 1998, I was hired as the Middle School Principal at Lockwood Schools in Billings where I served proudly for thirteen years. I continue to hold certificates in Special Education P-12, Elementary Education K-8, and School Administration.

What are some of the reasons that made you choose Education as a career?
I chose education as a career because of my high school counselor. Until my junior year in high school, I really had no idea where I would be in 10 years. My counselor became a very important adult and role model for me and instilled a sense of confidence and self-worth. Because of her guidance and the strong relationship we had, I chose education. I wanted to make the same kind of positive impact on the lives as she did for me. But mostly, I did it because she told me I would be good at teaching and I believed her.

Please give two aspects in Education that you find rewarding?
There are many aspects that I find rewarding in education. However, if I had to choose two aspects that I find the most rewarding, I would have to choose the lasting relationships and the incredible feedback we receive.

Over my 25 years, I have made many lasting friendships with former students and even work with a few at Yellowstone Academy. However, my favorite experience is when you cross paths with a former student who is living a successful life and they thank you for making a positive change in their life journey. It’s priceless to hear those words from a young adult.

In your career as an Educator, did you find yourself drawn toward a certain major?
I have always been drawn toward kids who struggle both academically and social-emotionally. My first job in education was working in a middle school resource room, and 25 years later I find myself back working with students with special needs. It’s definitely where I belong! Many people choose a career and a place to work; I believe YBGR chose me and I feel very lucky to be exactly where I’m suppose to be.

In summation what are your reasons for working here at YBGR and Yellowstone Academy?
I didn’t fully understand the reasons until after I started my new position at Yellowstone Academy. I was persuaded to work for the Ranch by one trusted adult and a gut feeling. After just a few days working with staff and students, I knew I had made the right move. I have completely enjoyed my position at the Ranch and love the students I get to work with each day. Yellowstone Academy and YBGR is truly a unique place for kids, and I feel very lucky to be part of it.

Charles McGahanGuidance Counselor for Yellowstone Academy

Briefly introduce yourself/degrees/certifications.
I earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education, History/Psychology. Latter I earned a Master’s Degree in Guidance and Counseling/Secondary Administration. I have been an educator for 39 years. Starting in Wolf Point, Mt., moving to Laurel, Mt. as a counselor then high school assistant principal, next to Billings Senior as an assistant principal, on to principal at the Billings Career Center, and now Guidance Counselor at YA. Patti and I have been married 38 years and have two children, Jenny and Cory. Our family loves watching/going to sporting events, go Griz. Another passion is riding our Harley over the Beartooth Pass and through Yellowstone Park.

What are some of the reasons that made you choose Education as a career?
I enjoy History and Psychology, so teaching the subjects that I truly liked was fun and rewarding. Several of my relatives were teachers and I have great respect for them. The longer I have been in education the more rewarding and fun it is. I have worked with “kids” in the classroom, the playing field, and on European field trips, what a fun exciting career. FUN!

Please give two aspects in Education that you find rewarding?
When my students realize the importance of learning and following appropriate social protocols in the classroom I can stand back and smile. When the student becomes an active self learner in the class I know that I have had a positive impact on that youth.

In your career as an Educator, did you find yourself drawn toward a certain major?
I have served in three majors; teacher, counselor, principal. I enjoyed each one of those phases. I have returned to Guidance Counseling because I enjoy the relationships I can develop with the student and the parent.

In summation what are your reasons for working here at YBGR and Yellowstone Academy?
Working with students that have struggled in education or life in general comes easy to me. I am strong in my conviction that a child should be given every opportunity to be a lifelong learner academically, socially, and psychologically. Working at the Yellowstone Academy provides me the time and place where I can work with our youth no matter what their life situations have been. I love being an educator.
