So, what is “Homes for Heifers”?
The Homes for Heifers program was developed many years ago as a way to fund programs to help the children living at Yellowstone Boys & Girls Ranch. Today your donation helps hundreds of children living in many communities around Montana, as well as children in residential care.
How can a rancher participate?
- The rancher can donate a heifer to YBGR, or can “adopt” a top quality heifer from YBGR and have it run with his/her herd.
- YBGR heifers have been chosen for disposition and maternal traits to make good gentle cows and weigh 750-850 lbs when delivered.
- The rancher breeds, feeds, vaccinates and cares for the cow with his/her own herd.
- YBGR comes by in the fall to collect the calf but the cow remains in the donor’s ranch.
- Calves are taken to YBGR’s feedlot to be backgrounded and fed, while allowing youth a chance to learn to work cattle.
- If a heifer turns up dry, the rancher sells it under YBGR’s name.
- The rancher has no responsibility should a cow die.
